Feeding the planet
Today, only two per cent of the food consumed on the planet come from the ocean. The potential for growth is tremendous.
The majority of the biomass in the world is found in the ocean. With the help of technology and research, this can be exploited in a sustainable way that maintains the rich wildlife in the oceans.
Compared to meat production, fish farming is significantly more climate-friendly. The production of one kilogram of meat generates much more CO2 emissions than the production of one kilogram of fish. If we are to provide enough food for the growing global population, we must increase the production of farmed fish and make the industry more efficient.
KONGSBERG works closely with the company Ocean Farming to develop the world’s first digital deep ocean-based fish farm. This will be able to overcome challenges we face relating to disease. One of the challenges when a fish farm is placed in a fjord is that the tide washes the same water in and out around the facility, leading to issues related to lice.
In an offshore facility placed in the ideal location, the water passes through the cage and washes away lice and other pollutants, creating an environment as close to natural as possible. This project utilises some of the more advanced automation and integration systems from KONGSBERG.
In addition to new solutions for fish farming, we work with commercial fishing to optimise their methods through the use of tools such as echo sounders and other fish finding technology. Based in Norway and a part of Kongsberg Maritime AS, Simrad manufactures advanced sonars, echo sounders (fish finders) and catch monitor systems for the world's fishing fleet. We offer world-wide sales and service to the fishery community resources that Norway's long coastline offers.
