Long-standing partnership
Kongsberg Norcontrol has been a long-standing partner of the MPA, having delivered its first Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system to Singapore in 1990. Over the years, this partnership has grown stronger, with Kongsberg Norcontrol continuously pushing the limits of VTS technology in collaboration with the MPA. This partnership ensures the smooth management of maritime traffic in the Strait of Malacca, the major shipping route for Asia – Pacific trade, and the busy Port of Singapore.
Tony Haugen, Managing Director of Kongsberg Norcontrol’s Singapore office, shared his enthusiasm for the new project, stating, "We are honored to have this opportunity to develop this groundbreaking prototype. The MPA is an invaluable partner whose collaboration has driven our mutual growth and innovation for decades. We look forward to continuing this partnership, striving for excellence and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve together."
Singapore: A global maritime epicenter
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore oversees the Port of Singapore, one of the world’s busiest transshipment hubs. In 2023, Singapore's vessel arrival tonnage surpassed 3 billion Gross Tonnage, with a total container throughput of 39.0 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Given the strategic importance of the Strait of Singapore—one of the globe’s busiest maritime routes—maintaining safety, security, and efficiency is crucial.
The development of the Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System is set to lead to a significant leap forward in maritime technology. This initiative aims to set new standards in maritime operations and establish benchmarks for ports worldwide aiming to innovate and sustain their operations in an environmentally conscious manner.
